
Questions you should ask before you board your horse...
If you will board your horse at a commercial boarding facility, thoroughly check it out before you take your horse there.
Ask for Vet references, Trainer references and Boarder refereneces.
You need to trust the owner and the employee there to take care of your horse(s) as if they were their own.
Find out ALL the details.
- Monthly board cost and what it includes.
- Do they offer discounts for 2 or more horses being boarded?
- Do they have a boarding agreement and riding liability release form?
- What paperwork is required before arriving at the stable? Coggins, record of shots, etc?
- How often will your horse be fed?
- What type of feed and hay will be provided.
- What are the hours you are allowed to be there?
- Will they give your horse any supplements you provide like vitamins?
- How often and how long will your horse be turned out?
- If his pasture mates pick on him too much, can his turnout schedule be changed?
- Will anyone be able to ride him without your permission? (Yes, I have heard of this happening.)
- Will your tack be secure?
- Are you allowed to let a family member or friend ride your horse there?
- Is monthly board due in advance?
- What happens if you are late paying your board bill?
- Will there be someone to hold your horse for farrier visits or will you have to make arrangements to be there yourself?
- Is there a charge for holding your horse for the farrier and/or vet visits?
- Is there a charge for the stable worming your horse on a regular basis?
- Can you have your own teacher give you lessons or can you only use the resident trainer/instructor?
- Does this barn allow any style of riding or is it exclusively Western, Dressage, Hunter, etc.?
- If your horse does not like the horse in the stall next to him, can you switch stalls?
- How often will his stall be cleaned?
- Are you limited to a certain amount of bedding each month/week?
- How much is extra bedding?
Boarding Facilities can be fun if you are the social type because there are plenty of other owners to ride and visit with. You can also organize fun horse parties, cookouts and dress up for Halloween!
Find a place you are comfortable with and is easy for you to get to and have fun!
